Insurance Services (cont.)
Since Medicare and private health insurance coverage
do not cover "custodial" (non-skilled) nursing home care or in-home
care, many families have seen the high cost of this long-term care
devastate their financial security. Some legal protection exists
so that the patient and spouse do not become totally impoverished in
order to be eligible for Medicaid assistance. Due to the
complexity of Medicaid law and regulations, as well as the lack of clear
and accurate information about Medicaid eligibility, many families
needlessly impoverish themselves in order for Medicaid to cover the cost
of long-term care, or spend more than is required before they seek
Medicaid eligibility for themselves, a spouse, or a parent.
There are many rules that govern the treatment of the
income and resources of Medical applicants. By planning in
advance, these rules can be used to economically protect the patient as
well as the spouse who remains in the community. To avoid losing
valuable assets to the cost of long-term care, learn about your rights
and options well before Medicaid is a necessity. ¹
