What is Long Term Care Insurance?
Long term care insurance provides assistance with basic activities of
daily living: bathing, cooking, cleaning, continence, dressing,
toileting, transferring (moving into or out of bed, chair, or including
wheelchair), and eating. Disability insurance, Medicare, and most
health plans (including State Health Benefits) do not cover these
services.
The cost of long-term care at home in an extended care facility or in
a nursing home is rarely covered by acute care medical insurance or
Medicare. Aside from paying the cost yourself, there are two ways
to pay for long-term care. The first is Medicaid, a government
funded Medical Assistance program, which pays the cost of medical care
for people with limited income and resources. It has stringent
financial requirements, which vary from state to state, but once a
person qualifies, most or all of the costs on long-term care are paid
for.
